I'm Dr Supriya McKenna, and I'm an educator, coach and mentor in the field of narcissistic relationships.
I qualified as a medical doctor
(GMC number 4115016) from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas's hospitals, London, in 1994 (now called
King’s College London GKT School of Medical Education ). I then further trained, qualified and worked as a General Practitioner in the South of England.
Having lost my own mother to cancer as a child, I wanted to be able to spend as much time as possible with my own children, and I happily made the choice to become a full time mother to my two children when they came along.
But, in time, I found myself compelled to return to the helping professions as a result of my own experiences with highly narcissistic individuals. It had become clear to me that an understanding of the challenges faced by those who had experienced narcissistic abuse was still sadly lacking amongst healthcare professionals, the legal profession and the general public, no matter how well meaning these people meant to be.
I built upon my medical experience by training in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, undergoing the
Oxford Mindfulness Centre 's teacher training in 2017, and I also trained further in personal performance coaching with
The Coaching Academy.
I now focus on educating the general public and family lawyers on the subject of narcissism through various means, including through my online courses, books, seminars, webinars, talks and podcast.
I also give 1:1 practical support, coaching and mentoring to the victims of narcissistic relationships. I help them first to come to terms with and understand what has happened to them, and then, should they choose to, to move forwards in their lives by disengaging from their narcissistic relationship. I work with victims of all types of narcissistic relationships, including parent/child relationships, and those with narcissistic friends, co-workers, bosses, and even neighbours - however I am particularly busy in the areas of separation, divorce, and post divorce abuse.
My particular area of expertise is working alongside family lawyers supporting those who are undergoing divorce and separation from narcissistic individuals. I help to put the control firmly back in the hands of the non-narcissistic spouse and their legal team, with the aims of preventing legal costs from spiraling out of control, preserving sanity and securing a good outcome for the client. I have had hands-on experience of the UK Family Court system, and therefore have a thorough understanding of its limitations, and the challenges involved.
I have trained thousands of family law legal professionals, including those at the very highest levels at the Bar and the Bench in Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
I also advise lawyers on how to understand and communicate with their own narcissistic clients, who they find themselves representing, and how to better manage any case involving a narcissist, regardless of which 'side' they are on. Complaints against the lawyer and non payment of legal bills is common with this group, and I help lawyers to identify such clients and prepare for the difficulties that will arise.
I am the author of several books on the subject of Narcissism, including an Amazon No. 1 bestseller to do with divorce (written in 2020). I've also written numerous health features and have been published in various publications, including Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, and Metro to name a few. I am regularly asked to provide comments for the media. I write monthly on the subject of narcissism for
Reader's Digest.
From Love-Locked to Leaving is the first book in my brand new series, Narcissists in Divorce. It is out on January 1st 2024. The second book in the series, From Leaving to Liberty will be out in early Spring 2024.
'The Narcissist Trap' is a book aimed at the general public.
I are also provide training for lawyers
and related practitioners on the subject of Narcissism in Family Law, and host a podcast
, "Narcissists in Divorce" aimed at both the general public and family lawyers, which has been a phenomenal worldwide success.
I love living in rural Berkshire and have two teenage children and labradors.
